IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa’s home opener against Tennessee Tech has been delayed late in the third quarter, with the stadium being cleared for about 30 minutes because of the threat of lightning in the area.
The Hawkeyes had taken a 34-0 lead on James Vandenberg’s 19-yard TD pass to Marvin McNutt when heavy rain, hail and lightning passed through Iowa City.
The players and coaches headed for the locker rooms and the stands were cleared.
It’s the second straight season that Tennessee Tech had a game delayed by weather. The Golden Eagles’ 2010 home opener was called after just 25 minutes of play because of rain and lightning.
