STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Joe Paterno is coaching Penn State’s season opener from the press box Saturday, three weeks after an accidental collision at practice left him with right shoulder and hip injuries.
The 84-year-old Paterno said earlier this week there was a “50-50” chance he would be on the sideline against Indiana State. He arrived separately from the team before Saturday’s game, sitting on a stool outside the locker room as the players arrived at Beaver Stadium.
Paterno has been shuttled around on a golf cart, and showed up at Tuesday’s weekly availability using a crutch to get to the podium.
He last coached from the press box in 2008, after he injured a hip in practice while demonstrating an onside kick.
