NORMAN, Okla. (AP) – Top-ranked Oklahoma will open the season Saturday night with heavy hearts and high expectations.
The Sooners will host Tulsa as the two teams kick off their seasons. The Sooners start their bid for an eighth national championship with the preseason No. 1 ranking for the first time in eight years, but also with a good deal of attention paid to who won’t be playing.
Oklahoma has been grieving the offseason death of starting linebacker Austin Box and will honor him in several ways. Tulsa will also pay tribute to a fallen teammate, wearing stickers in remembrance of Wilson Holloway, who died in February.
The Sooners will be without linebacker and team captain Travis Lewis because of a broken toe. And Damaris Johnson, arguably Tulsa’s best player as the NCAA’s career record holder in all-purpose yardage, will be held out after he was charged with felony embezzlement.
