COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is going with last year’s backup, Connor Shaw, over often-suspended Stephen Garcia.
Garcia had started the last 28 games for the Gamecocks and was the Southeastern Conference’s leader among returning quarterbacks in passing yards. But Spurrier said on his radio show Thursday night that Shaw had outperformed the fifth-year senior and open Saturday’s game with East Carolina.
Spurrier says Garcia will play the second quarter and then he will decide who will come out for the second half.
Garcia was suspended twice last spring, giving him five suspensions during his career with the Gamecocks. Spurrier had opened up the quarterback competition at the start of camp and said he and his offensive staff thought Shaw finished on top.
