COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Suspensions and graduation have opened the door for first-year players to get an early chance to show what they’ve got at No. 18 Ohio State.
An astounding eight true freshmen are listed on the two-deep for Saturday’s season opener against Akron. Five more redshirt freshmen – including two starters – are also set to make their collegiate debuts.
The first-year players – and those who are first year in terms of eligibility, as well – have helped swing the focus to a brighter future from all the ugliness of the NCAA suspensions, Jim Tressel’s forced resignation and Terrelle Pryor’s premature departure.
Ohio State lost half of its starters from a year ago, plus five key players are suspended for accepting improper benefits.
And the newest Buckeyes have taken advantage.
