JOHNSTON, Iowa (AP) – The new, corn-themed trophy awarded to the winner of the annual football game between Iowa and Iowa State has been scrapped.
The two schools and the Iowa Corn Growers Association announced Tuesday that the Cy-Hawk trophy will be replaced after fans complained about the design. It was unveiled Friday at the state fair.
Critics included former Iowa coach Hayden Fry and Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad. Many people questioned why a football trophy would feature a family huddled around a bushel of corn.
Craig Floss, the CEO of the corn growers group, says a temporary trophy will be designed for this year’s game on Sept. 10. Fans will be able to suggest a design for the more permanent replacement.
