HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) – Southern Miss football players Tim Green and Deddrick Jones have returned to the football field at full strength for the first time in eight months after being shot in an off-campus altercation in November.
Martez Smith was paralyzed from the waist down in the shooting. He has since graduated from Southern Miss, but returned to watch practice from the sideline.
Green yelled Smith’s name as he ran onto the field, calling the experience “pretty emotional.” Green was shot in the neck and Jones was shot in the chest. The players did limited workouts in the spring but weren’t completely cleared until this summer.
The Golden Eagles were in the first day of the NCAA’s mandated acclimation period of preseason practice, and won’t wear pads until Sunday.
