IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – An internal audit says the University of Iowa athletics department should increase its oversight of recruiting trips taken by coaches.
A report dated March 24 says half of the trips taken by coaches that were reviewed by auditors couldn’t be traced to a specific recruit’s record. Almost one-third of trips weren’t entered in the university’s travel database until after the coaches departed.
The report by the Office of Internal Audit found that better controls are needed to ensure coaches are complying with rules that strictly limit the nature and timing of their contacts with prospects.
Auditor Todd Stewart said Friday the hectic pace of recruiting can make it difficult to get travel approved beforehand, but the athletics department has agreed to do better whenever possible.
