SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Malik Zaire showed he could throw a long pass in the Notre Dame Blue-Gold spring football game, but couldn’t catch one.
Zaire threw a perfectly timed 68-yard touchdown that Will Fuller caught at the 6-yard line and raced in for a touchdown midway through the second quarter. But on a flea-flicker play drawn up by a fan in the third quarter, Everett Golson attempted a long pass to Zaire that was picked off by safety Max Redfield.
The defense won the game 36-34, and Zaire threw for two touchdowns and Golson ran for another. C.J. Prosise rushed for 64 yards on 12 carries.
Coach Brian Kelly says each quarterback needs to focus on his own play as they compete for the starting job in the fall.
