Here’s a sign of the times – the Big Ten Network is planning to broadcast live all but one of the conference’s spring football games this year on TV or the Internet.
The only exception is the conference’s most recent addition. Nebraska doesn’t want to show its retooled offense to its new rivals. Iowa doesn’t have a game, but has an open practice that will be televised.
Sports networks are discovering the value of airing the glorified scrimmages that spring games are, tapping into fervent fan bases that flock in the tens of thousands to watch the games in person if they can.
It’s free advertising in the middle of the offseason for programs competing for the country’s top recruits – though some coaches fret about giving away secrets to opposing teams.
