COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Dismissed tight end Weslye Saunders was back on South Carolina’s practice field working out for NFL scouts Wednesday.
Saunders was kicked off the team in September without playing a game his senior season. He was the focus of an NCAA investigation into the Gamecocks’ program about improper contact with agents and players staying at a local hotel for discounted rates.
At the NFL combine in February, the senior acknowledged lying to NCAA investigators. After his workout on campus, Saunders took the blame for his troubles, admitting that his mistakes got him thrown off the team.
Saunders hoped through his play and interviews with pro personnel he’ll show that he’s redeemed himself and won’t be a problem for an NFL organization.
