COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio State has promoted linebackers coach Luke Fickell to assistant head coach, and he will run the team the first five games of the 2011 season while Jim Tressel serves a suspension for NCAA violations.
Athletic director Gene Smith announced the move on Wednesday.
Fickell, a former Ohio State player, is in his 10th year on the staff. He is also co-defensive coordinator, a role he assumed in April 2005.
Ohio State has recommended to the NCAA that Tressel be suspended for the first five games of the season for knowing about players involved in selling memorabilia and receiving improper benefits. Tressel did not report it to his superiors or the NCAA for more than nine months.
