VERNON, Conn. (AP) – A man who stabbed University of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard to death in 2009 during a fight outside a campus dance is set to be sentenced.
Twenty-two-year-old John Lomax III of Bloomfield is scheduled to appear Friday morning in Rockville Superior Court. He faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading no contest to a reduced charge of first-degree manslaughter in January.
Authorities say Lomax, who had been charged with murder, stabbed the 20-year-old defensive back in the abdomen during a fight between a group of football players and a group that included Lomax. Investigators believe the fight started over a comment a player made about a woman.
Cases remain pending against seven other men charged in connection with the fight. No football players were arrested.
