BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – NCAA President Mark Emmert says he would be “happy to help” create a playoff format to decide a national championship for the top level of college football.
Emmert says the NCAA has a strong track record of running championships, but would only take over for the current BCS system if that was requested by the leadership of football bowl subdivision schools.
Speaking on Wednesday at the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge, where he was a member while serving as LSU’s chancellor from 1999-2004, Emmert stopped short of fully endorsing a playoff.
He says the NCAA’s goal is to maximize opportunities for athletes and that the bowl system does that well. He says the challenge would be to find a balance between the bowl system and a playoff format.
