AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -The Texas Longhorns are ready to start spring football practice, and coach Mack Brown says he expects his new quarterback will be “really good.”
Garrett Gilbert is replacing Colt McCoy, who set an NCAA record with 45 career victories as a starting quarterback and was twice a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.
But McCoy got hurt in his last college game in last season’s BCS championship game. Gilbert, who was just a freshman, played most of Texas’ 37-21 loss to Alabama.
Brown says that experience will help Gilbert become a team leader right away.
