CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -Virginia defensive end Jeffrey Fitzgerald is not enrolled in classes this semester.
Sports information director Jim Daves confirmed Monday the sophomore from Richmond, who is been expected to take over as the team’s top pass-rusher with the departure of Chris Long to the NFL, is no longer a student but declined to comment further, citing privacy issues.
The 6-foot-3, 279-pound Fitzgerald was a two-year starter who had 11 1/2 tackles for a loss and seven sacks last season. He also had two interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
The loss of Fitzgerald only adds to what has been a difficult offseason for the Cavaliers, who have also lost two-year starting quarterback Jameel Sewell, starting cornerback Chris Cook and two others for at least a year because of academic issues.
