NEW YORK (AP) – New Columbia coach Al Bagnoli calls his three-month retirement from coaching a ”sabbatical” that taught him he was not ready to leave the sideline.
The former Penn coach was introduced by Columbia on Tuesday, bringing one of the most impressive resumes in Ivy League history to a program that has been at the bottom of the conference for decades.
New Columbia athletic director Peter Pilling says he approached Bagnoli about the job before he even was hired by the school. Pilling’s first official day on the job was Monday.
Bagnoli says after winning nine Ivy League titles in 23 years at Penn he is looking forward to a different type of challenge and pledged to make football fun again for the Lions.
Columbia has lost 21 straight games.
