M University football players face burglary charges after police said they forced their way into an apartment to confront a student who used a racial slur.
The arrest warrants were issued this week for the eight players, who have been suspended until ``they resolve their off-the-field issues,'' said Michael McBroom, the school's athletic director.
In November, a student who is not a football player got into an argument with another student, who allegedly used the slur, police said. The student left the apartment after the slur was used and returned with a group of about 25 to 30 other students, including the football players, police said in a story on the Amarillo Globe News' Web site.
Two people broke into the apartment through a bedroom window and opened the front door to allow the rest of the group inside, police said.
ame open, numerous suspects assaulted the victim,'' Canyon police Detective Shayne Mays told the newspaper.
Second-degree felony warrants were issued for the players. Additional charges could be filed, Mays said. If convicted, each player faces two to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
``We may have a university here but this is a hometown where people raise their families,'' Mays said. ``That's not the kind of university town this is going to be.''
The Buffaloes lost 93-68 to Abilene Christian in the second round of the NCAA Division II football playoffs last year and finished the season with an 11-2 record.
