IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says five of the 13 players hospitalized this week with a muscle disorder following grueling offseason workouts are being discharged Friday.
Ferentz said in a statement released Friday that he’s hoping the eight remaining players also will be released soon.
The coach hasn’t spoken to reporters since the school announced Tuesday that the players had been hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis, a stress-induced syndrome that can damage cells and cause kidney damage.
Ferentz said in the statement that he’s been communicating with each player and their parents since learning they were hospitalized.
He said the health and well-being of each player in paramount and that he’ll work to make sure such an event doesn’t happen again.
