Associated Press (AP) – A jury has convicted a former University of Iowa football player of misdemeanor assault related to an October 2007 sexual encounter with a female athlete.
Jurors returned their verdict Thursday against 21-year-old Cedric Everson after 10 hours of deliberations, which started Tuesday. Everson faces up to 30 days in jail when he’s sentenced.
Prosecutors claimed Everson sexually assaulted the woman in an empty dorm room while she was passed out after one of Everson’s teammates, Abe Satterfield, assaulted her. Everson’s attorney claimed the woman was blacked out and didn’t remember consenting to sex with Everson.
Jurors did not find Everson guilty on the more serious charge of third-degree sexual abuse.
Satterfield previously pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge.
