North Carolina is hoping former Auburn head coach Gene Chizik can turn around its struggling defense.
The Tar Heels have hired Chizik as defensive coordinator after allowing the most points and yards in their history last year.
Chizik accepted an offer about 2 1/2 weeks ago, though the school didn’t officially announce the hiring until Monday once it was finalized. Team spokesman Kevin Best said the three-year deal will pay a base salary of $250,000 plus undisclosed outside compensation.
UNC allowed 39 points and 497.8 yards per game last year.
Chizik replaces Vic Koenning, who worked as associate head coach for defense for three years. Head coach Larry Fedora said last month that he and Koenning had reached a ”mutual decision” that Koenning would pursue other college jobs.
