IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says former player Cedric Everson initially denied involvement in an alleged sexual assault in 2007 but later apologized for lying.
In testimony at Everson’s second-degree sexual abuse trial on Wednesday, Ferentz said Everson claimed he went to a movie with volleyball players and stayed in his dorm on Oct. 13, 2007.
Ferentz said he confronted Everson days later after his teammates said he had been involved. The coach said Everson assured him the players were lying, but later requested a meeting to apologize for not being truthful.
Prosecutors say Everson snuck into a dorm room and sexually assaulted a female athlete who was passed out after his teammate, Abe Satterfield, first assaulted her.
He is fighting the charge, which carries up to 25 years in prison.
