IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A prosecutor says former Iowa football player Cedric Everson sexually assaulted a woman who was passed out, bragged about it to his teammates and then lied to his coach about the incident.
During opening arguments Tuesday at Everson’s trial, assistant Johnson County Attorney Anne Lahey told jurors that Everson attacked the female athlete after his teammate, Abe Satterfield, assaulted her. Satterfield has pleaded guilty and is expected to testify.
Lahey says the victim had been drinking and doesn’t remember the 2007 assault, but witnesses and DNA evidence would prove Everson’s guilt.
Everson’s attorney, Leon Spies, says the sex was consensual. He says Everson acted immaturely but didn’t commit a crime.
Everson is charged with second-degree sexual abuse. If convicted, he could face up to 25 years in prison.
