ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Doug Nussmeier wants to build Michigan's offense around toughness, physicality and explosiveness.
The Wolverines showed little of that this past season, struggling to run the ball and protect quarterback Devin Gardner. Michigan responded by firing offensive coordinator Al Borges and hiring Nussmeier, who had been the offensive coordinator at Alabama under Nick Saban.
Nussmeier has worked in the Big Ten previously - as quarterbacks coach at Michigan State - and he was introduced Friday by Michigan. Wolverines coach Brady Hoke says he's happy to have someone with national championship experience joining the staff.
Nussmeier says avoiding negative plays - sacks and lost yardage on runs, for example - will be a priority.
