SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Two coaches who each are in just the second season with their teams, and only a few years removed from relative obscurity, are a victory away from joining an elite club.
Either Auburn’s Gene Chizik or Oregon’s Chip Kelly will become just the ninth active coach in major college football to win a national title when the top-ranked Tigers meet the No. 2 Ducks on Monday night in BCS championship.
Chizik returned to Auburn, where he had been defensive coordinator, after a two-year stint as Iowa State’s head coach that produced five victories. His hiring was not universally celebrated by Auburn fans – to say the least.
Kelly was the offensive coordinator at New Hampshire five years ago and had never been a head coach at any level before Oregon promoted him after the 2008 season.
