NW vs. Iowa Pick

No. 8 Iowa hopes to have an easier time of winning this week when the Hawkeyes host Northwestern on Saturday at Noon ET from Kinnick Stadium.

Bet Northwestern at Iowa
The Hawkeyes are coming off a 42-24 win over Indiana last week after Iowa trailed 21-7 at halftime. Iowa scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to get the win and narrowly cover the 17-point spread. Iowa is now 9-0 on the season and 6-2 against the spread. Both of Iowa’s short comings in the betting odds came at home where the Hawkeyes were favored by 9.5 points or more. Six of Iowa’s nine wins are by 10 points or less.

Northwestern is 7-5 in its last 12 meetings with Iowa, including winning the last two in Kinnick Stadium. The Wildcats are 5-4 overall, but just 2-6 against the spread this year. Both covers came on the road. Of the Wildcats’ four losses, three have been by 11 points or less.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com have made Iowa 16.5-point home favorites over Northwestern on Saturday afternoon. The over/under total for this game has been established at 45.

It is hard to pick Iowa in this game as the Hawkeyes have played to the level of their competition this season. Ricky Stanzi threw five interceptions in last week’s win and has 13 interceptions on the year to 14 touchdowns. Adam Robinson is out for the season after leading Iowa with 629 yards rushing, meaning Stanzi has to make more plays now for Iowa. Northwestern’s defense has intercepted 11 passes and is holding opponents to 122 yards rushing per-game. The Wildcats had struggled against the pass, but Stanzi may not be consistent enough to cover the spread, which is the second largest spread Iowa has been given this season.

Iowa’s defense is its strength, but opponents have been able to move the ball on the Hawkeyes. Mike Kafka has thrown for 2,195 yards while completing 67 percent of his passes. The key for Northwestern will be to get more contributions from the running game to not force Kafka to have to make all the plays. The Wildcats should be able to move the ball on Iowa and keep things close. We are picking the Wildcats as the odds seem to reflect Iowa’s unbeaten record as opposed to its week-to-week performance. Look for a lot of points to be scored in this one as well, as we will pick the over.
