Rutgers struggling to score
Rutgers suffered its third shutout loss on the road this year when the Knights were beaten 35-0 by Indiana last weekend. Rutgers is 1-5 on the season, 0-4 in the Big Ten, 1-5 against the spread and 4-2 with the under.
The Knights have one of the nation’s worse offenses, averaging just 11.8 points and 267 yards per game this season. Defensively, Rutgers is giving up 36 points and 449.3 yards per game. Coach Chris Ash was already fired after the 1-4 start. Johnny Langan is currently the starting QB and he has 172 passing yards with two interceptions this year. Isaih Pacheco leads the offense with 384 yards and four touchdowns while Bo Melton is the leading receiver with 16 catches for 255 yards and a score.
Gophers picking up steam
Minnesota has put on a few dominant performances at home in recent weeks, beating Illinois 40-17 and Nebraska 34-7. The Gophers are now 6-0 on the season, 3-0 in the Big Ten, 3-2-1 against the spread and 3-3 with the over/under total.
The Golden Gophers are led by a strong defense that is giving up just 23.8 points and 311.8 yards per game. Offensively, Minnesota is putting up 35.5 points and 415.8 yards per outing. Rodney Smith is leading the offense with 675 rushing yards and four touchdowns while Tanner Morgan has 1,378 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. Rashod Bateman is the team’s leading receiver with 24 catches for 533 yards and four touchdowns.
College Football Betting Trends
Rutgers
The Knights have hit the under in four straight games in October and in six of their last seven following a failed cover.
Minnesota
The Gophers have hit the under in five of their last six conference games and in seven of their last 10 overall.
Prediction:
These two hit the over in their lone Big Ten meeting three years ago, but I like the under for today’s game. The Gophers are still unproven and are going on the road, but I expect another impressive defensive effort against a putrid offense. Rutgers is going to be lucky to score more than seven points today. Minnesota is pretty steady with its offensive effort, averaging right around 35 points. Their ball-control style of play should allow them to control the clock and not let the scoring get too high.
College Football Week 8 Prediction: Minnesota/Rutgers Under 47.5
