With a loss already to its credit, No. 14 Penn State could use some tough non-conference games to boost its BCS ratings.

Unfortunately for the Nittany Lions, that isn’t what is happening on Saturday when they host Eastern Illinois from Beaver Stadium at Noon ET.

Penn State completes its non-conference play this week which already featured Akron, Syracuse, and Temple. Now the Nittany Lions host the Football Championship Subdivision team in the Panthers. Penn State is coming off a 35-17 win at Illinois last week to bounce back from its 21-10 loss to Iowa two weeks ago. Darryll Clark has been hot and cold for Penn State this year, throwing for 1,133 yards and nine touchdowns to go with six interceptions. Derek Moye has become Clark’s main target, catching 19 passes for 309 yards. In the running game, Clark has 100 yards rushing on the year, while Evan Royster has 410 yards with four touchdowns. Defensively, Penn State ranks tops in the Big Ten in fewest points allowed per-game and is second in yards allowed, passing yards allowed, and rushing yards allowed.

Eastern Illinois is 4-1 on the season with its lone loss coming last week to Eastern Kentucky, 36-31. The Panthers are led by Jake Christensen, who has 1,090 yards passing with 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. Mon Williams leads the rushing attack for EIU, tallying 441 yards and six touchdowns in five games.
