Public Betting Trends
According to the latest oddsmakers, Miami is the favorite in this game, as the Hurricanes are getting odds of -14 points against Virginia Tech. The over/under total for the contest is listed at 46 points. The public betting currently has 53 percent going on Virginia Tech as the road underdog. This information is subject to change, however, so be sure to check out our NCAAF Public Betting Page for updated figures on the game.
Hurricanes riding strong defense
Miami had a bye last weekend and the Hurricanes had a 17-12 win over Central Michigan at home two weeks ago. The Canes are 2-2 on the season, 0-1 in the ACC, 2-2 against the spread and 2-2 with the over/under total.
The Miami defense has been really strong this year, as the Hurricanes are giving up just 16 points and 270 yards per game. Both of which rank in the top 20 in the nation. Offensively, Miami is averaging 31.2 points and 422.2 yards per game. Jarren Williams has thrown for 1,027 yards and seven touchdowns this year without an interception. Tight end Brevin Jordan is his leading target with 16 catches for 233 yards. DeeJay Dallas leads the ground attack with 343 yards and five touchdowns.
Hokies struggling
Virginia Tech is coming off a bad 45-10 loss at home to Duke last weekend. The Hokies are struggling in conference play, as they are 0-2 thus far with a 2-2 overall record. The Hokies are 0-4 against the spread and 2-2 with the over/under total.
Offense hasn’t been a strength for Tech this year, as the Hokies are averaging 363.5 yards per game while scoring just 23.2 per contest. Defensively, the Hokies are allowing 28.5 points and 352.5 yards per outing. Ryan Willis is leading the team with 851 passing yards and eight touchdowns, but he also has five interceptions. Deshawn McClease is the leading rusher with 222 yards while Tayvion Robinson has 18 receptions with 190 yards.
College Football Betting Trends
Miami
The Hurricanes are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 games in October and 4-12 ATS in their last 16 ACC games.
Virginia Tech
The Hokies are just 2-9 against the spread in their last 11 games on grass and 1-7 ATS in their last eight ACC games.
Prediction:
The trends don’t really support either team for this game, but something has to give. Fourteen points is a lot to give up with Miami considering it only beat Central Michigan by five at home two weeks ago. Still, the Canes have covered in four of their last five against the Hokies and they have had two weeks to prepare for this game. With a young QB, I think Miami can make a lot of progress with offensive execution in two weeks. Tech is coming off getting throttled by an average Duke offense and the Hokies also gave up 35 on the road to Boston College. I like Miami to use some of its speed to break this game open and earn the cover.
