The Hokies couldn’t have asked for a worst start to the season, losing the opener 33-30 to Boise State then getting embarrassed in a 21-16 loss to James Madison the following week. Since then, Va-Tech has went on to defeat East Carolina and Boston College. The Hokies are moving the ball effectively on the ground, averaging 180 yards rushing per game while the defense is holding opponents to just 307 yards per game. Four different Hokies have over 100 yards rushing, led by quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who has 201 yards while also passing for 746 yards and five touchdowns.
The Wolfpack were projected by many to finish near the bottom of the ACC this season, but a 4-0 start including wins over Cincinnati and Georgia Tech have made the Wolfpack a contender this year. The offense is posting 434 yards per game behind the arm of Russell Wilson, who has thrown for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns while the duo of Mustafa Greene and Dean Hayes have over 450 yards rushing and six combined scores. Defensively, the Wolfpack have been tough against the run, holding opponents to just 125.8 yards per game.

Virginia Tech is expected to go without stud running back Ryan Williams, who has a hamstring injury that has forced him to miss one game already this year. N.C. State is primarily healthy with no major injuries heading into the game.
