Cyclones survive opener
Iowa State is coming off a bye last weekend, but the Cyclones got a scare in their opener two weeks ago when they edged Northern Iowa in OT, 29-26. Iowa State was a 22.5-point favorite entering the game, but the Cyclones did go over the 42-point total.
The Cyclones dominated the total yardage in the win, putting up 463 yards while giving up just 262. However, Iowa State had one costly turnover that turned into a defensive touchdown. Brock Purdy led the offense with 278 yards and two touchdowns on 30 of 41 passing. Deshaunte Jones caught 14 of those passes for 126 yards while Johnnie Lang led the ground attack with 60 yards on 14 carries. O’Rien Vance led the defense with eight tackles and two sacks.
Iowa looking strong
Iowa opened up Big Ten play last weekend with a 30-0 win over Rutgers. The Hawkeyes are 2-0 on the season and 1-1 against the spread. They also are 1-1 with the over/under total.
The Hawkeyes are putting up 34 points and 451.5 yards per game on offense this season while the defense is giving up just seven points and 185 yards per game. Nate Stanley has thrown for 488 yards and six touchdowns through two games to lead the offense while Mekhi Sargent is the leading rusher with 150 yards and a score. Ihmir Smith-Marsette is the leading receiver with eight catches for 148 yards and three scores. Michael Ojemudia is leading the defense with a pair of interceptions.

Iowa State
The Cyclones have failed to cover in four straight home games and in five straight non-conference games.
Iowa
Iowa is 5-1 against the spread in their last six non-conference games and 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games.
Prediction:
These two have had some competitive games over the years, but Iowa has found a way to win the last four meetings. I think this Iowa team has the potential to really do something in the national picture. Their offense seems to have a spark that they don’t usually have and their defense remains strong. Iowa State doesn’t quite have the pieces on either side of the ball. The Cyclones will need a fast start if they hope to win because Iowa will beat them up for fourth quarters. I don’t see Iowa State getting that fast start.
