Akron at Penn State

A season of promise and excitement begins on Saturday at Noon ET for Penn State when the Nittany Lions host Akron at Beaver Stadium.

A favorable schedule and an All-Big 10 quarterback have Penn State thinking national championship in 2009. That big begins against the Zips, who Penn State has defeated twice in season openers in the last seven seasons.

Bet Akron at Penn State

Penn State loses its top three receivers from the 2008 season, but brings back quarterback Daryll Clark who threw for 2,592 yards and 19 touchdowns while earning First Team All-Big Ten honors last season. Clark has the support of running back Evan Royster, who rushed for 1,236 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2008 and had a 6.5 yards-per-carry average. While the Nittany Lions offense may be down, the defense should be just as strong as 2008, where it held opponents to 14.4 points per-game, which ranked eighth in the country. Penn State’s strength on defense will be at defensive tackle, where Jared Odrick and Ollie Ogbu return. Odrick was a First Team All-Big 10 pick.

The Zips return 15 starters from 2008, led by quarterback Chris Jacquemain, who threw for 2,748 yards and 20 touchdowns in a quarterback-heavy Mid-American Conference. Jacquemain has top targets Deryn Bowser and Andre Jones back this season. The two combined for over 100 receptions and 1,400 yards in 2008. J.D. Brookhart is in his sixth season as coach of Akron, which is the longest reign of any MAC coach. Brookhart has had three-straight losing seasons and is on the hot seat to contend for the MAC title in 2009.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com have made Penn State 27.5-point home favorites over Akron on Saturday afternoon. The over/under total for this game has been established at 58.5
