In-state rivals will officially kickoff the 2009 college football season when
UtahState at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Thursday at 9PM ET for the “
Battle of the Brothers”.
The rivalry between these two started in 1892 and is the oldest rivalry in
Utah. The Utes have won the last 11 meetings and are 27-5 against
UtahState since 1977. The 109th meeting between the two teams will be the last for a couple seasons as the two have agreed to not play again until 2012 in order to free up both programs’ non-conference schedule.
Utah is coming off an unbeaten season in 2008 and is riding a 14-game winning streak as a program. The Utes are ranked No. 19 in the AP College football poll for their first pre-season ranking in the school’s history.
Utah’s biggest question is if it can replace quarterback Brian Johnson who threw for over 2,900 yards and 27 touchdowns to lead the Utes in 2008. Kyle Whittingham hasn’t announced a starter yet, but the battle is down to transfer Terrance Cain and freshman Jordan Wynn. Cain has taken most of the snaps in practice and expected to start.
UtahState coach Gary Andersen was a former defensive coordinator for the Utes the past five seasons and is making his head coaching debut on Thursday. The Utes have won just nine games in the last four seasons out of the Western Athletic Conference. The Aggies return 10 starters on offense, led by quarterback Diondre Borel, who threw for 1,705 yards and rushed for 632 yards to lead
UtahState in both categories in 2008.
UtahState is looking to keep Borel in the pocket more this season, where he can throw to three returning receivers that had over 20 receptions each in 2008.
