A battle of two top-20 programs highlight the opening night of the 2009 college football season when Boise State hosts Oregon at Bronco Stadium Thursday night at 10:15PM ET.
The No. 14 Broncos upset the No. 16 Ducks last year in
Ore. by a score of 37-32. Now,
Oregon makes the trip to
Id. for a game on the blue turf. The Broncos are 3-11 against the Pac-10, but all three wins have come against
BoiseState has won its last 19 games at Bronco Stadium, and have won 49-straight regular season games at home. Quarterback Kellen Moore returns for his sophomore season with
BoiseState after throwing for 3,486 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2008, including 386 yards and three scores at
Oregon. The Broncos offense averaged 37.6 points per-game last season, but it was the defense that allowed Boise State to win 12 games, holding opposing teams to just 12.6 points per-game. Leading the Broncos’ defense is senior cornerback Kyle Wilson who was named the WAC preseason defensive player of the year after intercepting five passes in 2008.
Chip Kelly makes his coaching debut for
Oregon, replacing Mike Bellotti who stepped down after becoming the school’s athletic director. Kelly was the offensive coordinator for the Ducks for the past two seasons and should keep the Ducks offense moving.
Oregon finished seventh in the country in scoring offense in 2008, averaging 41.9 points per-game. The offense was led by running backs Jeremiah Johnson and LeGarrette Blount who combined to rush for over 2,200 yards and 30 touchdowns. Johnson is gone, but Blount is back to lead the rushing attack. Jeremiah Masoli will return at quarterback after throwing for 1,744 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2008. Masoli also rushed for 718 yards and 10 scores, making him a dual-threat in the backfield.
