Iowa St. Win's by 2 in Triple OT

In the season opener for Iowa State they did something they have never done before, win in overtime. And what a win it was. The Cyclones (1-0) beat Toledo (0-1) 45-43 in a triple overtime stunner.

Todd Blythe caught a pair of touchdown passes in OT and Quarterback Bret Meyer added three TD runs for Iowa State, which picked up its first OT win in six tries.

The win came after Toledo receiver Chris Hopkins couldn't hold on to a potential tying two-point conversion pass on the goal line.

Blythe caught a 29-yard TD pass from Meyer to tie it for Iowa State in the second overtime. Blythe and Meyer hooked up again on the first play of the third overtime, with Blythe grabbing a 25-yard TD pass with one hand. Meyer followed by running in the two-point conversion.

Blythe, Iowa State's biggest offensive threat, had only three catches in regulation. But after begging McCarney for the ball in OT, the junior came through with two of the biggest catches of his career.

Toledo (0-1), which rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit, finally ran out of answers. Jalen Parmele scored from 2 yards out to cut Iowa State's lead to two. Hopkins caught 13 passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns, but couldn't come up with one more grab as the thriller ended.

Overtime woes cost Iowa State the Big 12 North title in each of the last two seasons. Losses to Missouri in 2004 and Kansas in 2005 prevented the Cyclones from reaching the conference title game.
