(TheSpread) – Over the last three years, Stanford has become a dominant force in the Pac-12. Will the Cardinal stand tall again this year in the conference?

According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Stanford has been given 16/1 odds to win the 2014 BCS National Championship. The Cardinal have also been given odds of +450 to win the Pac-12 Championship and a money line of +200 to win the Pac-12 North. The over/under for wins for Stanford has been set at 9.5.

David Shaw is in his third season at Stanford and he has a 23-4 record in his two season. Stanford has claimed at least 11 wins the last three years, including last year’s 12-2 season that saw the Cardinal win the Pac-12. This year’s team returns a total of 15 starters from the 2012 squad.

On offense, Stanford will welcome back sophomore quarterback Kevin Hogan, who saw some action as a freshman, throwing for 1,096 yards and nine touchdowns with just three interceptions. Unfortunately for Stanford, the team loses its leading rusher and top five receivers from a year ago. What is good for Stanford is it returns four starters on the offensive line, which should help the team be strong on the ground no matter who is getting the carries.

Defensively, Stanford had eight starters back from last year, led by a solid front seven that helped create 57 sacks in 2012. Linebacker Trent Murphy had a team-high 10 sacks in 2012 and is back for his senior year, as is end Ben Gardner, who had 7.5 sacks a year ago. Also back is safety Jordan Richards, who had three interceptions and a team-high 12 pass deflections a year ago. The Cardinals allowed just 17.2 points and 336 yards per game in 2012. Those numbers should remain strong this season.

When it comes to wins, Stanford has proven it can get to 10. The non-conference schedule is pretty light despite a season finale at home with Notre Dame. In Pac-12 play, Stanford has a reasonable schedule traveling to Utah, Oregon State, Washington State and USC. The Cardinal will get to host the likes of Arizona State, Cal, UCLA and Oregon. If the Stanford defense remains strong and Hogan can develop some chemistry with his receivers, the Cardinal should get to 10 wins just fine.
