Florida Season Odds
(TheSpread) – The Florida Gators flirted with a national championship appearance in 2012. Can Florida find a way to win it all this season?
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Florida has been given 25/1 odds to win the 2014 BCS National Championship. The Gators have also been given odds of +950 to win the SEC Championship and a money line of +400 to win the SEC East. The over/under on wins for Florida this season has been set at 8.5.
Will Muschamp is in his third season with Florida. The Gators saw big improvements on defense from year one to year two, but the offense has not been nearly as potent as when Urban Meyer was coach. Florida went 11-2 last season and this year’s squad has 11 starters back.
On offense, Florida really struggled in the passing game last season. But, the team returns quarterback Jeff Driskel, who threw for just 1,646 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2012. Driskel has three starters back on the offensive line, but he loses his top receiving target and leading rusher from a year ago. If Florida is going to be successful on offense, it will be on Driskel to make things happen, which is why he has been given 40/1 odds to win the Heisman Trophy.
On defense, Florida was one of the top units in the country in 2012. The Gators allowed just 14.5 points and 287 yards per game last season and the defense has four starters back this year. The strong point will likely be the secondary, which has two starters back, including junior Marcus Robinson, who had 12 pass deflections and two interceptions last season. Florida does lose five of its top six tacklers from 2012, which means the front seven will have a lot of inexperience.
When it comes to wins, Florida has a tough road to nine. The Gators have a road trip to Miami and a home game with Florida State in non-conference play and also have conference road games with LSU, South Carolina and Missouri. Add in home games with Tennessee and Arkansas and a neutral-site game with Georgia, and the Gators will have to really excel to get to nine wins. Florida can do it, but it could see an occasional letdown during the season from such a difficult schedule.
