(TheSpread) – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish got back into the national title picture in the 2012 season. Will Notre Dame be able to stay on top in 2013?

According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Notre Dame has been given 50/1 odds to win the 2014 BCS National Championship. The over/under win total for the Fighting Irish has been set at 9.

Brian Kelly is entering his fourth season with Notre Dame. Last season, the Fighting Irish had an unbeaten regular season and reached the BCS Championship Game before getting hammered by Alabama, 42-14. This year’s team has 14 starters back from that squad.

Offensively, Notre Dame took a big blow before the season even started. Quarterback Everett Golson was booted from the program due to academic violations. Now, the Irish will turn to Tommy Rees to run the offense. That will put more pressure on George Atkinson Jr. to produce at running back. Notre Dame does return three starters on the offensive line and two key receivers in T.J. Jones and DaVaris Daniels.

On defense, Notre Dame was one of the best in the country in 2012. The Irish held opponents to 12.8 points and 305 yards per game. Notre Dame held opponents to 17 points or less in all but two games last season. The defense has eight starters back, but lose leader Manti Te’o, who had 113 tackles and seven interceptions. Still, the Irish return junior end Stephon Tuitt, who had 12 sacks in 2012. Three starters also return in the secondary, which should keep Notre Dame strong against the pass.

Being an independent, Notre Dame has a pretty tough schedule to get to nine wins. Road games include trips to Michigan, Stanford and Pittsburgh. The Irish also host the likes of Michigan State, Oklahoma, USC and BYU. Along with that, Notre Dame will face Arizona State at Cowboys Stadium midseason. If Tommy Rees struggles under center, it could be a challenge for Notre Dame to get nine wins.
