According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Michigan State has been given 100/1 odds to win the 2014 BCS National Championship. The Spartans have also been given odds of +700 to win the Big Ten Championship and a money line of +300 to win the Big Ten Legends Division. The over/under win total for Michigan State has been set at 8.5.

Dantonio is in his seventh season with Michigan State and coming off a 7-6 season in 2012. The Spartans had won 11 games the previous two seasons and played in the Big Ten Championship Game in 2010. This year’s team has a lot of question marks, but still returns 16 starters.

Where Michigan State should be its strongest is on defense. The 2012 unit allowed just 16.3 points and 274 yards per game, making it one of the top defenses in the country. This year’s group has seven starters back, led by linebackers Max Bullough and Denicos Allen. Bullough had 111 tackles in 2012, which led the team. The MSU secondary will also be tough, as it is led by Darqueze Dennard, who had seven pass deflections and three interceptions in 2012.

Where MSU could have problems is on offense. The Spartans averaged just 20 points and 359 yards per game last season. The 20 points was a drop off of 11 points per game from the 2012 team. Quarterback Andrew Maxwell is back for his senior season, but he was just 234-436 passing in 2012 for 2,606 yards and 13 touchdowns. MSU will return four starters on the offensive line, but must replace running back Le’Veon Bell, who rushed for 1,793 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2012.

When it comes to wins, Michigan State appears to have six wins lined up based on the schedule. The key for the Spartans to get to nine wins will be finding a way to beat rival Michigan at home and picking up a few tough wins on the road against teams like Notre Dame, Iowa, Nebraska and Northwestern.
