MIAMI, FL (The Spread) – After weeks of waiting, the BCS National Championship Game takes place tonight with Alabama meeting Notre Dame at 8:30PM ET from Sun Life Stadium.

Alabama is 12-1 on the season and 6-7 against the spread. Notre Dame is 12-0 overall and 7-5 against the spread. Alabama has hit the over in 6 of its 12 lined games while Notre Dame has hit the under in 10 of its 12 games. These two last met in 1987 with Notre Dame winning, 37-6.

Trends show that Alabama is 4-1 against the spread in its last 5 bowl games and 6-1 ATS in its last 7 at a neutral site, but just 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games on grass. Notre Dame is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games at a neutral site and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 against a team with a winning record.

According to oddsmakers from Bovada.lv, Alabama is the clear favorite in this game, as the Crimson Tide have odds of -9.5 points against Notre Dame. The over/under total has been set at 40.5 points. (View Matchup) The opening odds for this game had Alabama favored by 7.5 points. The spread was never lower than that, and it hit a peak of 10 points before closing at Alabama -9.5.

Alabama comes into the game as the SEC Champion, having beat Georgia, 32-28, in the conference championship game. The Crimson Tide won their final three games of the season after losing to Texas A&M, 29-24, at home. The Tide did have three of their last five games decided by 5 points or less. Alabama is averaging 38.5 points per game on offense, which ranks 13th in the nation. The defense is allowing just 10.7 points per game, which ranks second nationally behind Notre Dame. Alabama has been led by the running back duo of Eddie Lacy and T.J. Yeldon, who have combined for 2,182 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns.

Notre Dame had a perfect regular season, getting a 22-13 win over USC in the final game of the season. The Fighting Irish had plenty of scares during the season, seeing six victories come by single digits, including two in overtime. Notre Dame does have the top scoring defense in the nation, allowing just 10.3 points per game. The offense has struggled with a young quarterback, scoring just 26.8 points per game. Quarterback Everett Golson has improved during the season. He has thrown for 2,135 yards and 11 touchdowns this year, but the team is led by linebacker Manti Te’o. Te’o was a Heisman finalist as he had 103 total tackles, 1.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss. He also intercepted seven passes and had 11 pass deflections.

In terms of Injuries, Notre Dame tackle Tate Nichols is questionable with a knee injury while defensive end Kona Schwenke is questionable with a shoulder injury. Alabama linebackers Dillon Lee and Ryan Anderson are suspended for this game while receiver Kenny Bell is questionable with a leg injury.

The Public Bets for this bowl game are backing Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are getting 66% of the wagers with odds of +9.5 points against Alabama on Monday night.
