Wichita State wins the West
(TheSpread) – The West Region was expected to be wide open, but not many would have expected Wichita State to reach the Final Four.
Wichita State came into the West Region as the ninth seed, not having reached a Final Four since 1965. The Shockers started their run to the Final Four by beating eighth-seeded Pittsburgh, 73-55. Wichita State followed that up by beating top-seeded Gonzaga, 76-70 in a big early-round surprise.
Wichita State then moved on to Los Angeles for the regional semifinal, where it beat fellow Cinderella, La Salle, 72-58 in a 9 seed vs. 13 seed matchup. On Saturday, the Shockers completed the run to the Final Four by beating second-seeded Ohio State, 70-66.
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Wichita State came into the NCAA tournament with 66/1 odds to win this region and reach the Final Four. This means a wager of $100 on Wichita State to win the West will pay out an additional $6,600.
In Saturday’s win, Wichita State dominated the game from the opening tip and built up a lead to 20 points in the second half before Ohio State made a strong push back. The Buckeyes got within three points before the Shockers closed the game out. Wichita State held Ohio State to 19 of 61 shooting from the floor and 5 of 25 shooting from 3-point land. Malcolm Armstead had 14 points and nine rebounds to lead the Shockers, as six players had eight points or more for Wichita State.
