Syracuse wins the East Region
(TheSpread) – The first team to punch its ticket to the Final Four is Syracuse. Here is a look at how the Orange found their way to Atlanta.
Syracuse entered the tournament as the fourth seed in the stacked East Region. The Orange opened play with an 81-34 win over 13th-seeded Montana and then followed that up with a 66-60 win over 12th-seeded California.
In a bit of a shocker, the Orange beat top-seeded Indiana, 61-50, in the regional semifinal thanks to its impressive defense. Syracuse followed that up with a 55-39 win over third-seeded Marquette in Saturday’s regional championship.
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Syracuse started the tournament with 5/1 odds to reach the Final Four, meaning a $100 wager on the Orange with pay out an additional $500. Syracuse is making its first Final Four appearance since 2003, when it won the national championship.
In Saturday’s win, Syracuse’s defense was again the story. The Orange kept Marquette to just 12 of 53 shooting from the floor and 3 of 25 shooting from 3-point land. Syracuse didn’t shoot all that well, but didn’t need to. James Southerland had 16 points and four rebounds to lead the way while Michael Carter-Williams added 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
