Highlighting Thursday’s games is a showdown between fourth-ranked Pittsburgh (24-3) and visiting West Virginia (17-9) at 9:00PM EST. Oddsmakers and online sports book Sportsbook.com have made Pittsburgh 7.5-point favorites. According to the latest trends, the Panthers are 4-2 versus the Mountaineers over the past three seasons.
Although most teams in the Big East face each other just once during the regular season schedule, this will be the second meeting between Pittsburgh and West Virginia. On Feb. 7 in Morgantown, the Panthers pulled away down the stretch for a 71-66 win.
Pittsburgh will be attempting to rebound from its 60-59 loss to St. John’s Saturday in Madison Square Garden, falling on a late layup by Dwight Hardy. It ended a five-game winning streak for the Panthers, who are sitting atop the Big East standings at 12-2. West Virginia is riding a high as it put together one of its best games of the season in downing Notre Dame 72-58 at home on Saturday.
Senior Casey Mitchell leads the Mountaineers at 14.8 points per game, while Pittsburgh’s Ashton Gibbs averages 16.7 ppg. Gibbs returned from missed three games with an injury to score 26 in the losing effort against St. John’s.
Elsewhere in the NCAA, 14th-ranked Connecticut (20-6) is at home to face Marquette (16-11) at 7:00PM EST. UConn is a 5.5-point favorite. 13th-ranked Florida (21-5) hosts Georgia (18-8) at 7:00PM EST. The Gators are also 5.5-point favorites. In the Pac-10, No. 10 Arizona (23-4) travel to Southern Cal (15-12). Arizona is a 1-point favorite.
