Georgetown vs. Syracuse Odds
Syracuse, NY (AP) – It’s been nearly nine years since Syracuse lost to Georgetown at the Carrier Dome. That’s also the last time the Orange dropped three in a row there.
The surging Hoyas, meanwhile, would like to extend their own winning streak.
Coming off a pair of strong road performances, No. 12 Syracuse looks to continue its home success against 11th-ranked Georgetown as the Big East rivals meet Wednesday night.
Current college basketball odds and oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com have made Syracuse 4.5-point spread favorites for Wednesday’s game against Georgetown. Current college basketball public betting information shows that 56% of more than 797 bets for this game have been placed on Syracuse –4.5.
The Orange (20-4, 7-4) have won six straight and 11 of the last 12 against the Hoyas (18-5, 7-4) in Syracuse. That includes a 73-56 triumph on Jan. 25, 2010, when both teams were ranked among the top seven in the poll.
In March, though, top-seeded Syracuse was unable to carry that home success against eighth seed Georgetown in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament, falling 91-84 at Madison Square Garden. The Hoyas eventually lost in the final to West Virginia.
Now, the Orange would like to gain a measure of revenge while avoiding their first home defeat to Georgetown since Feb. 24, 2002. That loss was also part of their last three-game slide in upstate New York.
Syracuse is in position to match that feat, following an 83-72 loss to then-No. 7 Villanova on Jan. 22 with a stunning 90-68 defeat to Seton Hall three nights later. A loss at Marquette on Jan. 29 was the Orange’s fourth straight overall.
But they have bounced back since, winning at then-sixth-ranked Connecticut 66-58 last Wednesday before cruising 72-49 at South Florida on Saturday.
“I want to believe we’re back,” Orange sophomore guard Brandon Triche said Tuesday. “Going against Georgetown is definitely a test. It’s going to be a test of our focus. They really know our defense pretty well and figure it out, so as a team it’ll be big for our confidence to get that win.
“It’s definitely going to show that we’re back.”
Rick Jackson has been vital over the last two games, making 14 of 24 shots to total 34 points with 25 rebounds. The senior forward’s 16 double-doubles rank among the most in the nation, and are nine more than the next highest total in the Big East.
“We didn’t really think about (losing two straight at home),” he said. “We won our last two. I can’t wait to play at home.”
Jackson’s 58.3 percent shooting and 11.5 rebounds per game lead the conference this season, but he wasn’t nearly as effective against Georgetown in March, making 2 of 6 shots for four points with four boards.
Another big effort from Jackson, however, could make Jim Boeheim the fifth coach with 850 wins, joining Bob Knight, Mike Krzyzewski, Dean Smith and Adolph Rupp.
The Hoyas are currently the hottest team in the Big East, winning six in a row. However, Chris Wright’s steal on the final play Saturday helped them avoid a major scare in an 83-81 win over Providence. Georgetown nearly wasted an 18-point lead by missing all 11 3-pointers in the second half and seven free throws in the final 9 minutes.
Wright has thrived against the Orange. The senior guard is averaging 19.8 points over the last four meetings, including 27 points with six assists and six rebounds in last year’s conference tournament.
Wright is third in the league with an average of 5.4 assists.
Austin Freeman, who scored 23 against the Friars, is averaging 22.2 points over the last six games. The senior guard is third in the conference with 18.7 points per game, and averaged 20.7 in three meetings with Syracuse last season.
