RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Melvin Johnson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark an 18-2 second-half run Monday night and VCU broke open a close game and beat East Tennessee State 84-60, the Rams’ fourth consecutive victory.
Johnson’s first field goal gave VCU (9-3) a 38-29 lead. He connected again 44 seconds later and the Rams took over at both ends, forcing five turnovers as they quickly built their lead to 53-31.
Jalen Riley led ETSU (6-3) with 18 points and Lester Wilson scored 11, but the Buccaneers had more turnovers than field goals for much of the second half after the sloppy start took them out of it.
They finished with 22 turnovers that VCU turned into 23 points and 20 field goals. They were 20 for 52 (38.5 percent).
Johnson led VCU with 15 points, Treveon Graham scored 13 and Michael Gilmore had 10.
