WASHINGTON (AP) – Mike Phillips scored 19 points and hit two free throws with 9 seconds left to help Howard defeat Loyola (Md.) 69-65 on Wednesday night, snapping an eight-game losing streak.
The Bison (2-8) trailed 62-56 with 3:12 left to play, but six straight points tied the score at 62 with 1:39 to go.
Howard took its first lead, 65-64, since the 17-minute mark of the opening half after a layup and free throw from Phillips with 47 seconds remaining.
Leading 67-65 with 10 seconds left, Phillips stepped to the line with an opportunity to put the game out of reach. After sinking both free throws, the Bison led by four, 69-65, as Loyola was unable to get off another shot.
Justin Drummond scored 17 points for the Greyhounds (4-7). Erik Etherly had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Anton Dickerson added 15 points for the Bison, who hadn’t won since beating Bowling Green 54-52 on Nov. 12.
