HONOLULU (AP) -Six Gaels scored in double-figures as St. Mary’s cruised to an 89-65 win over East Tennessee State in the first semifinal of the Rainbow Classic on Friday night.
Diamon Simpson had a double-double for St. Mary’s (9-1) with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Carlin Hughes added 15 points for the Gaels, Lucas Walker had 12, Patrick Mills and Yusef Smith had 11 each and Omar Samhan added 10.
Kevin Tiggs and Courtney Pigram led the Buccaneers (5-6) with 16 points each. Teammate Travis Strong added 10.
Midway through the first half, St. Mary?s went on a 23-5 run to go up by 20, 37-17, with 5:50 remaining. East Tennessee State responded with a 20-4 run of its own to pull to within four until Carlin Hughes’ half-court 3-pointer just before the first-half buzzer put the Gaels up 44-37 at the break.
St. Mary’s extended its lead to 22 points in the second with a 17-2 run to go up 76-54 with 6:10 remaining. East Tennessee St. would get no closer than 17 the rest of the way.
The Gaels shot 11-of-24 from behind the 3-point arc.
