ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -Vincent James scored 19 points, K.J. Garland had 18 and UNC-Asheville continued its best start in 14 years with an 82-73 win over South Carolina State on Monday.
Reid Augst added 15 points and Bryan Smith 14 points and nine assists in coach Eddie Biedenbach's 151st win at UNC Asheville.
Biedenbach moved past Jerry Green into second place on the school's all-time list as UNC-Asheville improved to 8-2 for the first time since the 1983-84 season.
Jason Flagler had 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds for South Carolina State (3-8). Thomas Bookman had 14 points and Jason Johnson scored 12, but South Carolina State's late rally was thwarted by the hot-shooting Bulldogs.
After Flager's bucket cut the lead to five, Garland hit a 3-pointer and James a three-point play as UNC-Asheville built its lead to 75-64 with 4:30 left.
