MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Blake Hoffarber kept up his sharp shooting as a starter with 20 points and Ralph Sampson had his first career double-double, leading Minnesota to a 97-74 victory over St. Joseph’s on Saturday.
Hoffarber moved into the starting lineup a week ago, and in three games the junior has 51 points. Hoffarber, a 3-point specialist whose production fell off last season after a promising freshman year, went 7-for-14 from the field – including 5-for-9 from beyond the arc.
Just as encouraging for the Gophers (7-3) was the inside work by Sampson, a sophomore who finished with a career-high 16 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three blocks. In 42 previous games for the Gophers, Sampson had reached double-digit scoring only nine times.
Darrin Govens and Garrett Williamson each had 15 points for the Hawks (3-6), whose losing streak reached six games for the first time in 11 seasons.
