WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) -Garrison Carr scored 28 points and hit five 3-pointers to lead American to a 67-46 win over Saint Francis on Monday night.
American (1-1) led 31-19 at the break and surged ahead with a 16-5 run to open the second half. Carr hit Brian Gilmore for a dunk, and made back-to-back 3-pointers to lead the surge for the Eagles. The Red Flash (0-2) never came closer than 15 for the rest of the game.
Gilmore scored 13 and Derrick Mercer added 11 points for American, which played before a spirited opening-night home crowd of 2,123 that watched the Eagles raise their first NCAA tournament banner in a pregame ceremony.
Kurt Hoffman, Cale Nelson and Steve Profeta each scored eight to lead the Red Flash, who shot 34.7 percent from the field and opened with two straight losses for the second season in a row.
